About
On the first and third Shabbat morning or every month we come together from all over L.A. to create a participatory, musical service that sounds good, feels good, and gives you enough space to grow Jewishly. After services, we sit down to a communal table for a Shabbat dairy potluck lunch. On the fourth Friday of each month, the gathering is even more informal, with Shabbat candle lighting, a communal potluck diary dinner, followed by a relaxing evening of schmoozing and song. There’s always an empty chair or two at our table, so come on in, say “Shalom,” and experience a smaller, more personal kind of Jewish community.
The Movable Minyan, begun in 1987, is a Jewish non-profit religious organization completely run by volunteers. We are a tax exempt membership organization that on a budget less than what some congregations spend on their office copier, creates a full Jewish year of services and activities. We do this by operating as a small cooperative synagogue. All Members are asked to participate in a set-up schedule, and if they are willing, in leading services, reading Torah and/or giving drashot (interpretations of the Torah) and teaching the children. An elected president and board of directors organize these activities. In its early years, the minyan moved from living room to living room, hence the peripatetic name. Though most activities are at our new home at the Westside Jewish Community Center at 5870 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036, some activities continue to be held in members’ homes.
