About
On the first and third Shabbat morning or every month we come together from all over L.A. to create a participatory, musical service that sounds good, feels good, and gives you enough space to grow Jewishly. After services, we sit down to a communal table for a Shabbat dairy potluck lunch. On the fourth Friday of each month, the gathering is even more informal, with Shabbat candle lighting, a communal potluck diary dinner, followed by a relaxing evening of schmoozing and song. There’s always an empty chair or two at our table, so come on in, say “Shalom,” and experience a smaller, more personal kind of Jewish community.
The Movable Minyan, begun in 1987, is a Jewish non-profit religious organization completely run by volunteers. We are a tax exempt membership organization that on a budget less than what some congregations spend on their office copier, creates a full Jewish year of services and activities. We do this by operating as a small cooperative synagogue. All Members are asked to participate in a set-up schedule, and if they are willing, in leading services, reading Torah and/or giving drashot (interpretations of the Torah) and teaching the children. An elected president and board of directors organize these activities. The name Movable Minyan was due to our practice during the early years of holding activities in one member's home or another. As time went on, we moved into more permanent digs, first the Westside Jewish Community Center, then the Institute for Jewish Education and then back to the JCC (renamed J Los Angeles), Just recently, we have temporarily returned to our peripatetic roots, meeting in members' homes.
