High Holy Days

The Movable Minyan conducts a full schedule of services for the High Holy Days at our home at the Institute of Jewish Education. Our services are led by congregants, rather than clergy, and offer all who attend an opportunity to enter fully into the Days of Awe through song, interpretation, and study sessions for both adults and children. We use the High Holy prayer book “On Wings of Awe,” by Rabbi Richard Levy who is Director of Rabbinic Studies at the LA campus of Hebrew Union College. The machzor (prayer book) takes a contemporary approach and uses Hebrew with transliteration and inspiring English interpretations of many of the prayers and psalms.
Our approach to the High Holy days integrates interpretive, spiritual, and educational ideas. For Selichot, we conduct services with an interpretive touch, featuring a story, film or learning activity. Each day’s service features a drash, or Torah discussion led by one of our members, it’s a time when a lively give and take of that day’s portion can occur.
After Rosh Hashana services, the minyan meets at the Santa Monica Pier carousel before going down to the sea to cast away our sins during a Tashlich service. To remember those of blessed memory on Yom Kippur we read from a Yiskor book that we publish each year. On Yom Kippur afternoon, we discuss Jewish books and the children of the minyan present a dramatic interpretation of the story of Jonah.
